iPass Delivers Carrier and Device Independent Mobility Solutions for Embedded 3G with the iPass Open Mobile Platform

Now enterprises can gain real-time insight and cost control over the full range of mobile devices

REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. — March 23, 2010 — iPass® Inc. (NASDAQ: IPAS) today announced that the iPass Open Mobile Platform now provides out-of-the-box support for the Qualcomm Incorporated’s Gobi™ embedded-3G module, giving enterprises real-time insight and cost control over data access from corporate laptops and netbooks with embedded 3G capabilities.

iPass is leading enterprise mobility services providers by offering corporations deploying embedded 3G laptops and netbooks with carrier and device independence. Enterprises are able to mix and match networks and devices to meet their economic and business needs, without requiring changes in infrastructure or disrupting the user’s connectivity experience. iPass can now also activate the Qualcomm Gobi embedded 3G module as part of the iPass Mobile Network, which unifies 3G broadband mobile services, Wi-Fi hotspots, Ethernet access, and dial-up networks around the world.

“Embedded 3G promises to provide mobile employees with faster and more seamless data access from their laptop or netbook, however, challenges remain around 3G, specifically the expensive data overages, and roaming fees,” said Evan Kaplan, CEO of iPass. “With the iPass Open Mobile Platform, companies can now gain full insight and control into mobile worker activity independently of the network access technology, carrier contracts or device type. This permits a fundamental shift in the economics of mobility and puts the power back where it should be – into the hands of the Enterprise Mobility manager.”

Embedded 3G on laptops, netbooks and smartbooks is expected to drive the majority of mobile data traffic. According to ABI Research in its February 2010 report, mobile data traffic will increase by a factor of 12 by 2014 — to 9.7 exabytes, or 9.7 million terabytes – from 2008 and smartphones will only account for 10 percent of data usage. ABI expects 2014 to be the year that the majority of laptop, netbooks and smartbooks will be sold with embedded 3G modules.

The iPass Open Mobile Platform serves as the foundation of an innovative suite of cloud-based enterprise mobility services. By providing out-of-box embedded 3G support, iPass is extending its enterprise mobility services to laptops and netbooks with embedded 3G modules. Enterprises can now benefit from in-depth reporting and analytics on embedded 3G mobile usage across all their networks and devices, and powerful policy enforcement service that enables their IT staff to apply and enforce cost and compliance measures across the mobile workforce. The platform already provides these services today for more than 140 3G devices and through the Open Device Framework.

Pricing and Availability

Embedded 3G integration is currently in beta, and is expected to be available as part of the iPass Open Mobile Platform in late April.
