Generic Interface Specification

The next few years will see an explosion in the number of Wi-Fi enabled hotspots and hotspot operators. Smart clients can provide a common user experience that will make it easy for users to access the Internet at these hotspots. There is a great deal of work being done on next generation authentication protocols such as 802.1x to provide improved authentication at the hotspots. However, it may be several years before clients and servers supporting these protocols are commonly deployed. There is a present need for a protocol that allows smart clients to reliably authenticate to the many different access gateways being deployed at hotspots. This protocol must be capable of working in conjunction with the existing browser-based authentication methods used at hotspots today. The Generic Interface Specification (GIS) presents a viable solution already being implemented by many vendors that meets these needs and is becoming a defacto standard for current smart client to access gateway integration.
