“Work” is no longer a place

Wednesday, April 20th, 2011

When we released our end of year Mobile Workforce Report, we talked about the “destruction of place.”

No, that that we are bulldozing those office buildings, but that “work” doesn’t mean where you might go to earn your salary.

I read with interest the ReadWriteWeb article, How Location is Changing the Way We Work, which included statistics about the number of telecommuters, along with some tips from a well-versed mobile worker.

In our upcoming survey, which focuses on mobile workers, most of them do telecommute, but 40% with inconsistent schedules. Other comments I would add to this article:

  • For another way to aggregate and find Wi-Fi quality information, use our Hotspot Finder
  • If you are an iPass customer, you have a fast, easy way to connect to paid and “free” Wi-Fi networks. Free, does not mean free. Avoid those pesky login screens!
  • I can’t help you with battery power, but you can carry a third screen like I do. My tablet, also iPass-enabled, let’s me keep up with email, while I do work on the laptop. I can switch back and forth.
  • Good coffee? That’s up to you to find.

Regarding etiquette, we will have some interesting statistics for you soon. Checking a smartphone during someone’s live presentation. Really?
