Weekly News Wrap Up – the latest on Windows Phone 7

Since this was the week of the Windows Phone 7 news (ignoring the Apple vs. Google spat), I’m doing a wrap-up of a few news articles that I came across.
The FT, in “Microsoft squares that look hip,” says: “For a company rebooting its mobile phone strategy, the simple building-blocks look of the home screen on a Windows Phone 7 is an apt visual metaphor for the extensive reconstruction work under way to rebuild Microsoft’s smartphone reputation.”
Even Microsoft, says the ZD Net UK, explains that the Windows Phone 7 is a consumer phone first, with the idea that the mobile worker will bring the device into the workplace. Microsoft has talked about eventually adding enterprise features.
Paul Thurrott’s article, “Windows Phone 7 in the Enterprise?” covers this well. He notes the following enterprise features:
- ships with support for multiple Exchange Server accounts
- a decent Office Mobile client
- terrific SharePoint Workspace client
- however, the security is lacking key features
“Put simply, Windows Phone 7 is a wonderful platform for end users. But for the enterprise that wants to really manage what happens on the devices they deploy to end users, the initial shipping version is going to fall a bit short. And in all the hoopla around the release of this product, this is an important detail that often gets overlooked.”
Michael Otey, of WindowsITPro, gives a list of Top 10 Features for Enterprise, including security.
Steve Ballmer, of Microsoft, danced around the question of the Windows Phone 7 tablet – you can see the video courtesy of ZDNet.
And finally, to get a more complete review, read the “Review: Windows Phone 7″ by Greg Kumparek of MobileCrunch.
