Two new Nokia/Microsoft phones don’t add up to Microsoft’s productivity vision (video)

Friday, October 28th, 2011

Microsoft and Nokia showed two phones from their partnership. Nice, but not outstanding. And nowhere near the vision that Microsoft shows in their vividly-visual video (see below) about how mobile workers might work and interact with people and devices.

Microsoft/Nokia partnership: Nothing much so far by James Kendrick. “We’ve seen the first two Windows Phone products from Nokia, but neither one has that special something to set them apart from the competition.”

Nokia & Microsoft’s real challenge, by Om Malik. “The phones, as expected, from Nokia are stunningly beautiful. Nokia has a long history of making well engineered devices that have solid design. But it’s at the software-based user experience layer where Nokia starts to sputter…

In a perfect world, it’s an impressive new way of accessing information. However, it will be an uphill battle for the two companies to get traction with their combination. Why? Because we are living in a post iPhone and post-Android OS world and as consumers we have become used to interacting with mobile devices in a specific manner.”

Hands on with Nokia’s Lumia 800 and 710 Windows Phones, by Sean Ludwig
“Overall, both the Lumia 800 and 710 smartphones feel exactly as expected — Nokia’s smart design mixed with Windows Phone 7′s convenient and smooth operating system. If you’re looking forward to getting one, I’d pony up more for the Lumia 800, as it promises the best possible experience.”

But finally, Sean notes in “Microsoft’s vision of the mobile future is astounding” (see video below), “as emphasized by Microsoft’s latest Windows Phone devices launched yesterday, we’re nowhere near the vision that Microsoft has laid out for us. But based on how far smart devices have come since the introduction of the iPhone in 2007, it’s not hard to believe we could see these type of interactive machines and productivity apps in the next 10 years.”
