Three’s the charm: 4G, Wi-Fi and Wire
Wednesday, February 9th, 2011 Karen Ambrose Hickey, EditorThe article, “21st Century Triple Networks: Ubiquitous 4G, WiFi, & Wires,” by Dave Burstein of CircleID, discusses the need for the networks of this century requiring three elements: 4G for coverage, Wi-Fi (and femtocells) for capacity, and Wires (Copper and Fiber) for capacity, costs and availability.
Mr. Burstein says that “a hybrid 4G/WiFi/landline network is the way to meet mobile demand. ” And later in the article provides examples on how various carriers are expanding their infrastructure.
Mentioned in the article, is something written by David Reed in 2003 , called “The myth of interference” – Internet architect David Reed explains how bad science created the broadcast industry.
One excerpt about letting users decide what’s of value to them:
“For Reed the question is, What is the minimum agreement required to enable wireless communications to be sorted out? The less the system builds into itself, the more innovation — in ideas, services and business models — will arise on the edges.”
