Smartphones disrupted an array of technologies and counting

Thursday, November 18th, 2010

This article, “Smartphones: disrupting 10 markets and counting…,” really caught my eye after our Mobile Workforce Report findings. It’s amazing all the technologies that a smartphone is replacing, including:

  • PDA
  • Flip camera
  • GPS
  • and of course, PCs

Read through the comments too, as the list gets even longer!

As we were testing the hypothesis of the millennial workforce, I came across this article from ZDNet, called “What time is it? Today’s college students check their phones, not wrists,” citing research about what today’s kids know and don’t know. The thing that stood out is that most kids don’t wear a watch because they have a clock on their phone.

And I just talked to a customer yesterday. Because of the report, I asked what phone he would get next after his Blackberry. “Definitely not a Blackberry. Maybe just a plain only cell phone.” My jaw dropped. Then he thought about it and said, “If I have to pay for it, I think I will get a smartphone and use Wi-Fi so that I don’t have to pay for data. But then I get all the extras like GPS, internet, email…”

By the way. That picture above? Taken by my Droid X.
