Our July leaders – Android and iPad

Wednesday, August 31st, 2011

The July 2011 ComScore is out and wait…Android still leads in the share of smartphone markets.

“Android nabs 41 percent share in U.S., study finds,” by Don Reisinger, CNET, gives the following market share percentages for July:

Android: 42%
iOS: 27%
RIM: 21.7%
Windows Phone: 5.7%
Symbian: 1.9%

Also, 70% of smartphone owners sent an SMS message (what happened to those other 30%?). And, according to Matt Hamblen at ComputerWorld, in Android smartphones surge to 42% share, that was followed by browsing (41%), use of downloaded apps (40.6%), use of a social networking site or blog (30%), game-playing (28%) and listening to music (20%) (see chart).

And in the tablet world, Apple dominates and will continue to dominate. In “Our iPads Will Blot Out the Sun!” by John Paczkowski at AllThingsD, according to the latest figures from IHS iSuppli, global media tablet shipments will hit 60 million units this year, up a jawdropping 245.9 percent from 17.4 million in 2010. And of those 60 million tablets, 44.2 million will be iPads. In other words, Apple is expected to account for 74 percent of media tablet shipments in 2011.

Do we worry about Amazon? In the article “Amazon could ‘easily’ sell 5M of its expected tablets in Q4, Forrester says” by Matt Hamblen, they may be able to secure 2nd place.
