Mobile workers can use Wi-Fi to lower weight, stress
Wednesday, August 17th, 2011 Karen Ambrose Hickey, EditorThe idea of staying fit is just another thing that I pack when I travel.
The article by Dana Mattioli, called Business Travelers Pack Extra Pounds, Insomnia, Stress got me immediately thinking about how Wi-Fi can help. For you mobile workers, I know that it’s hard to work in a run or walk, or avoid that client dinner. But maybe some of these tips will give you ideas for your situation and preferences.
1. Use the hotel Wi-Fi to connect to YouTube or other exercise sites for some short routines to follow in your room.
2. Use a mapping tool to figure out a short run or walking route that will take you by a landmark. Make it easy with few turns and make visual cues for getting back (“turn at that restaurant”). I’m a runner and always try to get out for even 15 minutes. Here are some other benefits that I have found:
- Help manage jet-lag by being outside and getting your body and brain awake. Also good after a short (!) nap, if you have to take one.
- Get a better sense of direction and where you are by running/walking through the nearby streets. I’m always amazed at what might be around the corner. A great shop or restaurant that I would have never found.
- For less safe areas (I was once slowly followed by guys in a car), run around the parking lot. And around, and around…
- Always carry your phone – to take a picture or consult a map!
3. Look up restaurant menus ahead of time to pre-plan what you will eat, sticking to healthier options. Maybe walk there if it’s nearby and SAFE.
4. Fit in exercise, even 15 minutes after the meeting and before drinks if you are at the hotel. Or take a walking break. If it’s hot or high humidity, walk the hotel stairs (watch for locked stairway doors!).
5. Walk to the nearest (or not so near) coffee shop rather than getting something in the lobby.
6. Don’t use your computer late at night (or if you can’t sleep) – the screen will keep you up. I know, you mobile maniacs, sleep with your phone within arm’s reach, but give yourself a break occasionally.
7. Download soothing sounds to your tablet to help you sleep. (Note that you need Wi-Fi, not 3G, to download this!)
I know that there are trips that don’t give you a spare minute, but there’s always time. Even 10 minutes. Check your hotel and surrounding locations for iPass-enabled hotspots with our Hotspot Finder before you get there.
