Weekly News of Interest – Mobile Devices by the Numbers

Friday, August 13th, 2010

SmartphonesIn looking for a topic for the Friday news round-up, I came across the following article: The numbers don’t lie: Mobile devices overtaking PCs.

All week, I’ve been seeing articles about smartphone Q2 sales and increases(particularly of Android). But the above article provides statistics showing that mobile devices are growing at a spectacular pace. One line that I really liked:

Smartphones, or Mobile devices, will soon become the dominant computing platform for humanity and supplant the PC which has reigned since Apple ignited the Personal Computer revolution in the late 1970′s.

In our upcoming Mobile Workforce Report, we found:

  • Nearly 97 percent of mobile employees carry two or more mobile devices
  • 49 percent carry three or more.

Not only do mobile employees carry an extra phone for work, but they are now buying new iPads and other tablets. And, these devices are multiplying, as the mobile workforce grows. More devices are accessing the Mobile Web, and the appetite grows for more apps, sometimes a more efficient way to get to information on the Mobile Web.

IT will be required to embrace this chaos and focus on improving workforce productivity, which includes data access, manipulation and input. Security has moved out of the firewall, down past the connection and into the device.
