Interesting look at iPhone and iPad connections

One of our previous reports, the February 2010 Mobile Workforce Report, gave a breakdown of smartphones in use by mobile users.
32 percent of mobile employees ranked the BlackBerry smartphone as their mobile device of choice, but 54 percent of BlackBerry smartphone users would switch to an Apple iPhone if it was supported by their enterprise. Maybe some of them have.
We recently looked at iPhone and iPad usage for our iPass services and the shifting usage pattern:
- For our iPhone client, we now have 18% on iPhone 4. I’m sure that those are personal devices, now on the Enterprise networks. IT didn’t run out and get those for their employees. Just like my office, I’m sure that employees walked in on Monday with that new phone. (See: “Apple’s gravitational field and how I succumbed to it.”
- Looking at devices and distinct users, we see the following breakdown:
- iPod Touch at 13%,
- iPad at 21% (Wow!)
- iPhone 66%
It is interesting to me to see the iPod touch, but again, it’s another Wi-Fi enabled device, so why not get a little work done online?

Although it’s included in the iPass service, your IT dept has to submit a form to get access (It’s an agreement). Go to this page (or send IT): http://www3.ipass.com/mobile-employees/find-a-hotspot/favorite-hotspots/request-form/
I’ve heard that you can use the browser on the iPad and find iPass in the drop down as “suppliers” and it works OK. Otherwise, once your company is signed up, the iPass client will see the SSID and let you click on it. I definitely enjoyed using it on my trip on Virgin cross-country. Fortunately, I could plug in my laptop.
When will be able to use iPass to get to GoGo from an iPhone or iPad. Just flew AA and Horizon to Anchorage and used it (without iPass).
