Data usage trends from WBA Day 2

Tuesday, June 21st, 2011

Today was a day of death by powerpoint. Presentation after presentation by members of the WBA briefing everyone on their business and WiFi plans as well as support of the WBA initiatives.

By the way, NGH, means Next Generation Hotspots which need to provide: “ease of use, accessibility, increased security.” 3G needs to be complemented with Wi-Fi. These points were also made by the Chair of the Alliance (also CEO of BT Openzone) Chris Bruce in an interview with Shiny Shiny.

Here are a few other quick stats from a European and a Asia-Pacific carrier:

  • Last year they saw 1 new WiFi connection every 4 seconds; now it is one every 1.5 seconds
  • Their average user uses 8 times more data than the global average. They also have seen a 10 times increase in mobile data traffic from 444 terrabytes last year to 5,444 terrabytes now

As I said yesterday,…someone called out that extabytes will be next year’s big trend!
