51% of smartphone owners access travel content from device

Monday, April 23rd, 2012

comScore released its Travel Advisor report with results indicating that 51 percent of smartphone owners accessed travel content on their devices during the three month period ending February 2012, with nearly 1 in every 5 smartphone owners using their device to book air travel or hotel reservations.

51 percent of the smartphone audience accessed air and/or hotel content on their device, with most of these mobile travelers (80%) accessing both air and hotel content. Smartphones are easily convenient and can take advantage of either 3G/4G technology, or Wi-Fi, depending on the coverage area.

Now imagine this activity while traveling international on business. For a business traveler, he or she could be trying to cancel or change a flight, look up a hotel review or book a hotel while in another country and roaming on another carrier’s network. As smartphones become more important in everyday and business tasks, their data usage will continue to climb. Organizations will need to make sure that employees are able to get these simple tasks done, in the most cost effective (and painless) way possible.

And, as a final note, for business travelers on-the-go or planning a trip, the iPass Hotspot Finder provides hotspot information, such as whether there is Wi-Fi at a certain hotel, Wi-Fi in a given area, and the ability to save a list of hotspots for trips for reference on the go.
