BYOD alternative options

SmartphonesToday in Computerworld, Bye bye, corporate phone by Beth Stackpole, covers some interesting approaches by various IT groups in moving to a Bring Your Own Device policy.

Is it all or nothing? What if IT feels that they are offering more than enough Androids and Apples to go along with the Blackberries, but employees are still not happy? VMWare chose that approach and can now focus on more strategic opportunities.

A company may provide a stipend to help offset the new charges that an employee must now face. However, are is that employee ready to accept a wipe policy if their personal phone is lost or stolen? (Note to employees: back up your photos and videos!)

Does a company offer their employees the ability to join a corporate-backed plan with carriers? What if the carriers’ plans that are offered aren’t what the employees want?
