Android in the lead worldwide, for now

Today’s story by Brad Reed of Network World, Android Topples Symbian as World’s No. 1 Mobile OS, discusses a new report from Canalys showing that 32.9 million Android-based phones shipped worldwide in the fourth quarter, eclipsing the 31 million Symbian-based phones that shipped over the same period. Symbian had long been the most popular mobile operating system in the world.
Other details:
- Apple, which is said to be ramping up iPhone 5, shipped 16.2 million smartphones in the fourth quarter of 2010 (16% of the total share) and finished in third place
- Research in Motion’s BlackBerry OS finished fourth, totaling 14.6 million smartphone shipments in the fourth quarter of 2010, or 14.4% of the total share

An article from Daily Finance mentioned that “baked into the Android figures are the numbers for Tapas and Open Mobile System (OMS), two Chinese mobile operating systems based on Android. And Samsung and HTC helped push Android’s figures higher, accounting for 45% of the 33.3 million Android-based smartphones shipped in the quarter.”
