Android apps for IT Professionals

Thursday, September 22nd, 2011

Our upcoming Mobile Enterprise IT Report will discuss smartphones and tablets coming into the Enterprise and IT’s need to support them. Let’s combine topics with our Mobile Workforce Report, on ways that IT can themselves use their Android smartphones.

Eric Geier, on NetworkWorld, put together the 16 Essential Android Apps for IT Pros

I’ve highlighted some of the apps here; those helping with your Wi-Fi networks:

  • Wi-Fi Analyzer: Wi-Fi stumbler and analyzer app when setting up access points, checking channel usage, troubleshooting Wi-Fi issues, or doing Wi-Fi security auditing.
  • SharesFinder: This scans for Windows (SMB), FTP, and HTTP shares/servers on the network you’re connected to via Wi-Fi. It’s useful if you’re trying to access files on the network or when doing security auditing.
  • Overlook Fing: If you do any networking work, this is a must-have app. It can do TCP port scanning, pinging, traceroute, and DNS lookups on a network via Wi-Fi. It also shows the network details (SSID, IP details, and speed) of your current Wi-Fi connection.
  • RouterPasswords: This is a must-have for anyone that works with networking gear. It’s a simple database of the default login methods and credentials for over a thousand routers, gateways, modems, and other network components. Though you can find the same info online, this gives you quick off-line access.

And because there continues to be talk about the security of smartphones, particularly as they come into the Enterprise, I am including this article, 8 essential Android security apps, by Brad Reed, on NetworkWorld. This includes another app that’s good for IT pros:

Remote RDP Enterprise ($19.88): A nifty remote desktop application for IT pros who want to troubleshoot company computers remotely through their Android smartphone or tablet.

And, if you are an iPass customer, make sure to ask about OpenMobile for Android. Available at the Android Market.
