7 Tips for Windows 7 Upgrades

Monday, September 13th, 2010

Windows 7 I recently talked with Sarah Zoucha, one of our IT Administrators, regarding our company’s recent Windows 7 upgrade. Knowing that our customers are going through this process, I thought that Sarah could share some tips. Here are her 7 tips.

Here are her 7 tips for Windows 7 Upgrade (PDF here):

  • Windows 7 allows a longer life cycle with less hardware requirements
  • The built-In XP mode Windows 7 is more compatible with older software
  • Better security, so admins can control more refined areas of the OS through group policy
  • Migrate in stages – by small groups, and upgrade older equipment first
  • Have loaners ready (with Windows 7), so employees can work and start to adjust to the interface
  • Use USMT and the Easy Transfer Tool to migrate data AND personal settings – this gives a familiar feel
  • The tools create a log of programs saving time for installs after the upgrade

Another useful tip is knowing how to open Problem Steps Recorder. To do so go to the troubleshooting area in the control panel and launch it or search for psr.exe in the start menu.
